Fisheries and aquaculture sector deserves more public support

As a simple ceremony this afternoon, Director General of Department of Fisheries Syed Arif Azad released the study entitled “Comprehensive Study on The Aquaculture Sector in Bangladesh with Particular Focus on Existing Policy Support Received by the Sector and Scope for Improvements” conducted by Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation.

Chaired by Syed Mahmudul Huq, Chairman, Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF), the event was participated by Mr. GB Banjara, General Manager, SwissContactKatalyst, Ambassador Liaquat Choudhury, Policy Adviser, BSFF, Mr. Rafiqul Islam, former Director General, Department of Fisheries, Mr. MI Golder, Director (marine), DOF, Senior Officials from Department of Fisheries, industry representatives and senior officials from Development partners.
The speakers mentioned that the study is one of the most important comprehensive evidence based studies on the production realities in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Bangladesh and the state of public support to it. The study provided to obtain a deep insight into where we do stand in extending public support to our aquaculture sector and indicated that there is considerable scope to further widen and increase such support to the aquaculture sector. The speakers further said that extending and increasing such support has the potential to have a multiplier effect on the growth of this sector which is certainly going to help us achieve most of Bangladesh economic development goals and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
