A national workshop entitled “Bangladesh Fisheries and Aquaculture Potentials and Challenges for Development and Exports and Harnessing Fisheries Potentials of Blue Economy” was held at the Shaheed Nurul Amin Khan Memorial Hall of BIAM Foundation on 25th July 2018 marking the National Fish Week. The workshop was jointly organized by the Department of Fisheries, WorldFish and Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation. One of the main purpose of the workshop was to celebrate the recent achievements of Bangladesh in the Fisheries and Aquaculture. More importantly, it was also one of the main objective of the workshop to heighten national awareness about the important contribution that the fisheries and aquaculture sector is making too sustained economic development of Bangladesh, poverty reduction, employment generation, meeting nutritional and protein needs of the growing population of Bangladesh and the country’s export earnings. It was an occasion also to revisit the challenges before the sector and in what directions Bangladesh need to move to overcome these challenges all in trying to realize the huge untapped potential of the sector.
The honorable minister for Fisheries and Livestock Mr. Narayan Chandra Chanda, MP was the Chief Guest on the occasion and Mr. Raisul Alam Mondal, Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock was the special guest. Mr. Goljar Hossain, Director General, DoF presided over the proceedings of the workshop and Ambassador Liaquat Ali Choudhury, Policy Advisor of BSFF moderated the discussions. The workshop participants included representatives from Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, senior officials of Department of Fisheries both from the headquarters and divisions and districts, the WorldFish, BSFF, other line ministries, the private sector, academia, research institutions and the media.
